What is the purpose of McMillan Family Findings?

This website is intended to be a central place for the descendants of John McMillan and his wife, Mary Arnott, to share information. I found that many people were researching this couple, with many of us spending our time and money retrieving the same documents. This site is a way for all descendants to pool their information. This will allow us, as a whole, to make the most efficient use of time and money to further the research on our shared family history.

A second goal is to connect descendants that share common ancestry. Based upon information provided when registering and corresponding, I look to see if there are any "close" relatives that I could get in contact. Then, they can directly correspond and share as little or as much of their information that they feel comfortable sharing.

Who has contributed information?

The bulk of the information contained on this website has been provided by the owner of this site, Michelle McKenzie. Michelle started with the "McMillan Genealogy & History" book that was written about 1908. She's been working for over 10 years to verify and add to the information from the book, at much expense of time and money.

Many other descendants have kindly donated information, records and photos. The site would not be anywhere near as rich without the cousins contributing and guiding Michelle's research. In particular, we are greatly indebted to others for the wealth of photos that have been collected on the various branches and shared.

What are the terms of use (TOU) for this website?

As a genealogist, my goal is to present accurate information. The viewer, however, should always use information presented as clues to research and verify the facts themselves. McMillan Family Findings, i.e. Michelle McKenzie, shall not be held liable for any misinformation contained this website. If proper proof of an error is presented, I will promptly correct or remove the erroneous information.

Why do you require logons and why are the restricted to descendants?

This is simply another case of the few ruining it for the many. Unfortunately, a number of people have tried to download the entire family site for unknown use. Therefore, the site had to be restricted in this manner.

Will living information be available to view if I have a logon?

No. Due to concerns about identity theft, living information is not viewable even those that are logged in.

If I'm a descendant, why should I register?

Registration has some benefits. First, it gives access to a number of features of the website, including the photos, documents and histories. It also allows you to look in detail at all the research done for a particular person in the database.

Registration gets you in contact with the web owner, Michelle McKenzie, who will try to connect you with a close cousin based upon the information that you provide. You may find someone not too far up the branch from you. The site's best success, so far, has been to introduce people who shared a great-grandfather.

I registered but I still can't logon. Why?

Each registration request requires approval. The site admistrator receives an email and reviews the information. Then, your registration will either be approved or you will be asked for more information. Either way, you will receive an email notification. Please be patient.

Does your site cost money to use?

No. The website access is free to others, although I love to be "paid" in photos and documents.

[top]

Will I find information on other McMillans on your site?

No. Although I occasionally do some research on other McMillans that I run across when researching, none of that information will be included on this website. Even limiting the site to John and Mary's descendants has made the site very large. Since they are my focus, I have tried very hard to keep my research limited to them. There is always so much left to find out! Feel free to contact me if you have another McMillan group. I may have information on my personal computer--no guarantee, however.

I'd like to set up a site like yours. Any advice?

This site is created using The Next Generation of Genealogy SitebuildingŠ ("TNG"). I highly recommend it, although some knowledge of HTML is helpful in order to be successful.
